During the betting rounds, players try to create the best five-card hand they can by using their two personal cards and the five community cards on the table. The most common hands are pairs, three of a kind, four of a kind, straights and flushes. The highest possible hand is five of a kind (five aces beating five kings, for example). Tie breaks are determined by the high card.

There are also various side pots that players can win during a hand. These can be small, but they add to the overall pot size and can be a good way to get a winning hand.

In order to be successful in Poker, it’s important to read the other players at the table. A good way to do this is by watching their reactions to the cards that are played. For example, if a player flinches or smiles when their card is revealed, this can provide clues about whether they’re holding a strong or weak hand.

It’s also a good idea to learn to spot aggressive players from conservative ones. Aggressive players often make high bets early in a hand and can easily be bluffed out of a hand. Conversely, conservative players often fold their hands early and can be more difficult to bluff out of.

During the course of a game, it’s typical for players to establish a fund called a “kitty.” This can be used to pay for new decks of cards or for food and drinks. When a player leaves a poker game before it ends, they are not entitled to take any chips from the kitty that comprised their portion of the pot. The kitty is generally divided equally among the players who are still in the game.
